Volkswagen Scirocco turbo failure

I have a 2012 Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0 TDI BlueMotion. It broke down last week with plumes of white smoke coming from the exhaust. It was towed back to my local dealer and they tell me the turbo has failed. The repair will cost thousands.

After speaking with Volkswagen customer service and they have told me that, as the vehicle is over three years old, they will not contribute anything towards the cost of the repair. Even after considering that the vehicle has only done 27,000 miles and has a full service history.

Surely it is reasonable to expect a major component of the car not to fail after 27,000 miles? Is there anything I can do to escalate this further?

The turbo bearing oil seals have failed, possibly because the engine has repeatedly been switched off when the turbo was too hot (maybe because you live at the top of a long hill?) You could attempt to sue the supplying dealer in small claims, alleging that for the turbo to have failed so early in the car's life it would not have been "of satisfactory quality" when you took delivery: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/
