Volkswageb Touran has difficulty changing gears when cold

I own a Volkswagen Touran 2.0 TDI. It has a six-speed manual gearbox hat struggles to shift the gears when cold. The problem started a month ago. I tried all possible ways, but the gears were so stiff I could not shift at all. After leaving the engine running for about 15 minutes I've managed to shift the gears. Since then it’s now happening on every morning. I think the problem is getting worse. Any idea what the fault could be?

Might be a lack of oil in the transmission that ids partly alleviated by the remaining oil splash lubricating the gears when it gets warm. Yes, first thing to do is check the transmission casing for a crack. No cracks, change the transmission oil. If that doesn't fix it, start worrying about the box itself.
