After getting through its MOT, I was advised by the mechanic that the catalytic converter for my '99 T-reg Honda Civic Aerodeck estate (1.6 LS) was going to need replacing. I asked how much it would be and he quoted round about the £500 mark (£350 plus VAT for parts, and the rest for labour) as the converter is part of the exhaust manifold. Is this the case, as after googling catalytic converters for my car all that seem to pop up are items for around about £80. Could I not just buy one of these and get it fitted?
