Why is delivery of my Hyundai ix35 being delayed?

I ordered a Hyundai ix35 from a local dealer on 1 May 2010. I was given an estimated delivery date of 17 June 2010, so I paid a £500 deposit and agreed a part exchange value on my vehicle. Right up until last week I have been in regular contact with Hyundai and the dealer, and they both said that delivery would be at the end of the month. Last Wednesday I called Hyundai for an update and they stated there was an unknown delay and that my car was still waiting to be made on back order. They were unable to say when it would be made or why there was a delay.

I contacted my dealer, who said this was news to them and they would get back to me. They got back to me today and confirmed that the car hadn't been made yet and they had been told that there was an unknown delay. They also informed me that if the delivery comes in September then my part exchange value will have gone down by £1100 and I will have to pay this, in addition to the remainder of the balance.

Having viewed your page and onther online forums, I feel cheated as other purchasers have been told of delays etc but right until last week I was told that the car would be here by August. I now face having to pay another £1100 due to the fact Hyundai appear to have been less than forthcoming with information to me or to my dealership. I see this as morally the fault of Hyundai and wonder if there is any recompense I can seek with them - small claim court?

The R-Type chain can 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre diesel engines are replacing the old 2.0 and 2.5 belt cammers throughout the Hyundai/KIA range, but production has not fully shifted from the old to the new. That's the reason for the delay. Will go over to R Types fully in the next month.
