When driving a smell of exhaust enters the cabin. What is it?

When driving over distances of about 30 miles or so on the motorway at approx 70mph on occasion an exhaust gas smell enters the cabin. This is not constant, it can go for days with no smell then it will be there for a few journeys and not be there again.

The garage I use, usually excellent, have had it in, test driven it etc and cannot find a fault.

I am considering getting rid of it if this cannot be solved, any ideas please?

The most important check is that the entire exhaust system is completely gas tight. If it is, then the fumes must be getting drawn in from the tailpipe via the cabin vent one-way flaps that are situated at the lower sides of the load area behind the bumper side extensions. If either of the flaps are broken, then fumes could be drawn in that way. If your Zafira is an older model it will also be subject to the Zafira heater resistor recall.
