2007 Mondeo 2.2 TDCi - Turbo Blown

Hi
I have had my Mondeo looked at today by the RAC as it wouldn't start and have been told that the turbo has blown. Oil is coming out of the exhaust and a neighbour who is in the trade confirmed that it is definitely the Turbo. I have recently been putting water in the car every other day - my question is, if I get a refurbished turbo or whatever, will the water problem be solved? Is this caused by the Turbo? I have had a new water pump recently fitted and my car has always been so reliable!
Any advice would be great please.

Turbos on petrol engines are usually water-cooled. Turbos on diesel engines usually rely on engine oil being pumped through the turbo bearings. Eventually the turbo bearing oil feed and oil return pipes get partially blocked with carbon which leads to overheating of the turbo bearing and the turbo bearing oil seals fail. I think your coolant loss might have been due to the engine overheating, though, on a 2.2TDCI, the turbo may also have been water cooled. You can soon find out simply by looking at the pipework.
