What's clattering in my Ford Mondeo's engine?

I have 2002 Mondeo 1.8 petrol with 72,000 miles. Recently, an intermittent clattering has developed from the engine. In addition, whether related or unrelated, the starter motor has been a little temperamental. I therefore thought it may have been a flywheel problem. Having taken it to a garage simply to be looked at, the mechanic said it wasn't a flywheel problem, but one of the following. Either a problem with the chain, likely to result in replacement, or a dodgy bearing. The sound was coming from the driver's side of the engine. What are the prices for the above works?

It might be the swirl flaps come loose in the inlet manifold. If so, it needs to be fixed urgently otherwise the engine can ingest some of the bits and self-destruct. Timing chain problems are relatively rare with this engine.
