Do the car width dimensions listed on your website include the mirrors?

I have been looking at some of your reviews and see that in the price/specification section your figures do not seem to agree with other publications/websites. For example, in the case of the Volkswagen Golf you give the width as 1722mm/1787mm. Looking at Parker's guide, they give it as 2048mm. I take this as the width including mirrors. In your example, can you tell me what the two figures represent? Presumably the mirrors are not included in the smaller figure. Could the larger figure be with mirrors folded? This of some importance because of the limited width of my garage doors. It seems to me that modern cars are extremely wide because of their enormous mirrors.

The figures we list are without mirrors - the larger figure you usually see is with mirrors. Unfortunately this can be a grey area as there seems to be an equal divide among people who want figures with mirrors and those without. Our data is supplied by a company who use the smaller figure for consistency - other websites will sometimes quote one or the other but that's not always clear. The two figures we list for the Golf are for the three and five door models - 1779mm is the 3-door while 1786mm is the 5-door. Modern cars are certainly wider and have larger mirrors as a result, so if you have a narrow space it can be tricky to find a car that fits. Volkswagen don't give a width for the Golf with mirrors folded in their technical data - the only way to find out may be the traditional tape measure at a Volkswagen showroom!
