BMW F30 (316d) timing chain failure

I bought a BMW 316d one year ago, and so far I have been very satisfied. However, six months ago a metallic "ticking" sound began coming from the engine compartment. The sound has gotten worse since that time and it turns out that the dealer wants to replace the timing chain.

It seems the N47 engine is known to chew up timing chains, and the problem might come back after the warranty period has expired. Because of this I have had thoughts about getting rid of the car in favour of something with a more reliable engine.

Do you have any particular recommendation of a car in the same range as a 3 Series, maybe even a 3 Series with a petrol engine (assuming they do not eat up chains)?

Sadly, this is a common problem with the N43 petrol engine and N47 diesel. Eventually the plastic chain tensioner wears away and bits can block the oil strainer, starving the engine of oil. BMW now fits a new range of 1.5 3 cylinder and 2.0 litre 4 cylinder diesel engines.
