Audi A3 engine failure

My sister was recently driving to work when the engine in her Audi A3 (2008) started knocking. It was taken to Audi who diagnosed a new engine was needed. The car has done 103,000 miles and is out of warranty, however she has always maintained the car with her local Audi dealer for servicing. The dealer has quoted her £9000 as the price of a new engine.

Firstly I would expect an Audi diesel engine to last a lot longer than 103,000 miles. Secondly, after three years, what is the point in maintaining main dealer servicing if, when something goes wrong, the compensation offer is so derisory?

The 1.9TDI is the most reliable VAG 4-cylinder diesel engine. Far better than the 2006-2009 2.0TDI that suffers oil pump problems and the 1.6 that has had a lot of issues. But the 1.9TDI does have a history of sending a rod through the block.

If the problem with the engine is 'big ends', then it can probably be rebuilt by a member of www.fer.co.uk If not, then FER members are the best source of a rebuilt 2nd hand engine.
