Four-wheel drive selector problems with Land Cruiser

I recently test-drove several second-hand Toyota Land Cruisers, none more than a few years old. All had some problems with the (electronic) four-wheel drive selector: on turning the switch, 4WD either failed to engage or disengage. I have now bought a brand new vehicle, and face exactly the same problem. Is this a design flaw, or am I dong something wrong?

No record of a problem. Normally these systems have an auto selection which means that the system switches out of 2WD and into 4WD when it needs to, when slippage occurs. You have to stop to put it in low range permanent 4WD. But I can't remember if there is a permanent 4WD selection in between. Suggest you read the manual.
