Peugeot Expert showing engine management light

Every so often the engine management light comes on my Peugeot Expert (2002) and the engine starts to make a knocking noise. Sometimes it only lasts a couple of seconds, other times it can be a week. It eventually stops and the van runs ok for month or so and then happens again. Do you have any idea what the fault could be?

This is a compression ignition engine with a very high compression ratio.

Unlike the fuel/diesel mix, if water gets into the air being fed into the combustion chambers it cannot compress and the engine 'hydrolocks'. This is what you are hearing.

Just a little bit more water will bend the conrods with very serious consequences.

So make sure you seal the air intake system so water cannot get in and do not ever drive through floods.
