Ford Mondeo emiting a burning smell

Six months ago, I bought a 2009 Ford Mondeo 2.0 diesel estate from a main dealership. It has been great so far - it had 45,000 and now has 57,000 - was fully serviced on 45k and has had an oil change and a full service recently.
However, I have noticed a very strong burning smell - like a clutch burning. It usually happens after the car has travelled about 20 miles. Do you have any idea what might be causing the burning smell?

Will be the DPF regenerating. There's a fire going on inside burning off the soot so that explains the heat and the smell.
