A 'toxic fume filter' warning light has come on on my Renault Megane - could the diagnostic check be classified as a recall?

I noticed the Toxic Fume Filter System Warning light appear on my Renault Megane 1.6 Dynamique's dashboard yesterday, after driving 30 miles on country roads and a motorway. I have been informed by a Renault dealership that it is to do with excessive fuel consumption and that I need to bring it in to have a diagnostic computer check done. Do you think it will be an expensive job? I have also noticed on a number of other blogs that this is a common problem with this model of car and year (2005). If it is, could it be classed as recall? I look forward to your advice and help.

Until the Renault dealership has looked at your car and correctly diagnosed it there's no way of telling what exactly the fault is and how expensive it will be to repair. It won't be classed as a recall unless Renault have officially recalled the car and this is only usually for safety issues. If it is a common problem, you could contact Renault customer services and see what the chances of getting them to contribute to the repair is.
