Which Octavia - or do I buy the Hyundai i30?

I'm looking at a 2010 2.0 PD diesel Skoda Octavia L&K with 122,000 miles for £6750 or a 2008 1.8-litre L&K petrol Skoda Octavia with 22,000 miles for £5950.

Normally you would advise the newer car with higher miles but might the petrol make more sense in terms of avoiding DPF and DMF problems?

I'm also looking at a Hyundai i30 premium one 2.0 diesel 2008 the other 1.6 petrol 2010 for £5800.

If the diesel does 50mpg and the petrol 40 mpg the diesel will save me about £280 a year and £40 in road tax. I know you quote DPF replacement at about £1000.

Unfortunately the Volkswagen Group 1.8TSI can suffer serious oil consumption problems, so I wouldn't go for either. The i30 2.0CRDI has an old engine. The i30 1.6 petrol is too low geared. I'd keep looking, preferably for an i30 or a cee'd 1.6CRDI, pre 2010 which was when they acquired DPFs.
