Incorrect fault diagnosis from Vauxhall - can I sue?

My 2008 Vauxhall Vectra VXR has been suffering from a misfire problem and I sent it to my local dealership for a diagnostic test. The garage told me the timing chains needed replacing and they quoted £2221 for the job.

After shopping around I found another independent garage that charges less for labour, so I bought the parts and had them fix the car. However, a week later, the car started misfiring again and the diagnosis was obviously incorrect. Where do I stand on this issue with Vauxhall?

I'm afraid you have no rights to claim against anyone. The Vauxhall garage made a diagnosis, but you had the car repaired by another garage. Problem areas with the VXR in the Vectra entry at www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/vauxhall/vectra-c-20...d.

Timing chain failure is common on the 2.8 VXR and thought to be due to carbonising the oil by not letting the engine idle from hot before switching off.

Far better than previous Vectra. Now with decent handling and an excellent ride. Plenty of safety kit. Roomy in the front. Big boot. Good looks.
