Will I have to change the DPF in my Qashqai after three years?

You recently advised somebody who was thinking of buying a diesel car to take in to account replacing the DPF after three years. I have a one-year-old diesel Qashqai and, although I am aware after reading your column that long runs and high mileage are essential to preserve the DPF, I was not aware that they need replacing after three years. If this is the case I really think that this potential expensive replacement should be pointed out by dealers when selling diesel cars.

DPFs were fitted to all Qashqai diesels from mid 2010, but not to 1.5DCIs built before that date. But you have misinterpreted what I wrote. DPF life tends to be 3 - 6 years. They were legislated into diesels from January 2011, so there was no escape from then on. And if a DPF clogs with ash it may be possible to have it cleaned.
