Should I have fitted a satnav to the display screen in our Toyota Prius?

On 29th May I purchased a Garmin satnav from Halfords. The assistant offered to come out to set it up but we had an appointment to keep, so declined. I run a Toyota Prius, which has a 5-inch multi-display screen in the centre, just below the windscreen. The depth of the facia and the rake of the windscreen made it difficult to fit the satnav to the windscreen. We could not understand all the functions on the satnav, so two days later returned to Halfords for advice. An assistant came out to the car, explained the functions and, when asked if it was ok to fit it to the display screen, he stated it was. Indeed, on the few times we used it, it was ok until we had temperatures up to 29 degrees and I saw that the display screen had circular cracks where the suction pad had been and that we had lost some of the functions.

On making enquiries at the local Toyota garage I discovered that the cost of replacing the display was £2800. I spoke to the manager at the store about the bad advice I had been given, but in short, the company denies liability. I returned to the store and challenged the assistant who gave the advice. He could not recall coming out to a Prius, but was certain that to fit the satnav to the display screen would be stupid. Am I stupid? Do you think I have a claim against them?

All I can tell you is that it was completely wrongheaded to adhere an aftermarket satnav to a display screen. So it's a matter of whether you can prove you were given this instruction. www.clusterrepairs.co.uk might be able to help with the screen. You can buy various types of non-glue pads enabling you to fit aftermarket satnav to the dash top.
