Why aren't Lancias sold in the UK any more?

I have just returned from a holiday in Italy and couldn’t help notice the number of locals driving Lancia vehicles. There appears to be a full range of up to date and quite smart models and was wondering why these are not available in this country. I recall that Lancia cars did have a reputation for rusting many years ago, but would have thought that, like all motor manufacturers, that this is a problem that has been overcome by now.

The cars are still sold in Italy as Lancias. Some of them are now sold in the UK re-badged as Chryslers because the name Lancia became associated with rust in the UK after reports on Esther Rantzen’s ‘That’s Life’ TV programme in the 1970s. Calling them Chryslers may make no sense to you. It makes no sense to me either.
