What can I do to protect my car from bird droppings?

We have a carport which, in our East of Scotland winters, is beneficial for our two vehicles as early morning there is no problem with ice and snow. However summer is a different story, when the swallows arrive. There was one pair five years ago, but now there are four pairs. The vehicles suffer guano strikes. So now they are parked in the open but still get hit by swallow droppings. I have spoken with the sales manager at our dealership, who advises against car covers, suggesting the flapping could damage the paintwork. In your opinion are covers detrimental to the paintwork? If not would it save save on cleaning time? Plus we could reuse the carport?

I use a Dupont Tyvek cover that I bought from Halfords five years ago. It's still in one piece. Cost £75 then. Probably about £100 now. If anyone knows who now markets these in the UK, please let us all know. But never put a cover over a wet car. That traps moisture and leads to condensation and corrosion.
