Should our son buy a Land Rover Defender?

My son lives in the South Pennines and had a Freelander until he replaced it with a Captiva 18 months ago. He regrets this and wishes now to replace it, and (with a bit of help from his dad) says he would like a Defender 90. He has a sensible eye on the weather but I think he also would like the "fun" of a Defender. I have suggested a Freelander II, but he is not persuaded. I would very much appreciate you views.
