Why don't satnav updates show the latest road changes?

I just wanted to alert your readers to the fact that the Garmin SD update card for the Kenwood Sat Nat in Skodas is at least 12 months out of date. I purchased a card for £78 from their website in October 2012 which did not show the Hindhead Bypass which opened in July 2011. Garmin was unable to provide a satisfactory answer.

It's a mapping problem. First roads need to be mapped by Ordnance Survey. Then Navteq needs to digitise the maps. So it can take years for a new road to appear in the mapping.
