Interesting load lugger?

I have about £3k and am after a car.

I have a commute of only ten miles. I also play in a band and need to have something that can transport music gear, sometimes on much longer journeys. Not enough for a van, but too much for a hatchback.

I'd like something reliable and economical, but I'm concerned that the short commute might not be good for a diesel.

I also want something a bit interesting with some character. Living in the middle of nowhere, 4x4 might be useful.

I'm considering a Jaguar x-type estate or an Alfa Sportwagon for the interesting choices, and a Freelander or Skoda Octavia estate as more sensible ones.

What do you advise? Any other suggestions?

"Interesting" aways translates into "unreliable and expensive". Especially at this price level. Octavia or Mondeo probably best.
