Volkswagen Touareg - DPF problems

The yellow 'engine block' light has illuminated on my Volkswagen Touareg diesel during a 300 mile trip to Cornwall. It went out a day or so later only to come on again on the way home at the end of the week. My local dealer says it needs a new particulate filter and the cost is £2500. This seems excessive, is there any alternative to such a cost?

It's possible that a Unipart or Alliance Car centre or a few branches of Kwik Fit can clean out the DPF using the Ceramex process. But you cannot legally remove the DPF, even though VOSA in the UK has yet to figure out a way of enforcing the EC Type Approval law on this.
