What's causing sluggish performance on my Citroen Picasso?

I’m having some problems with my 2004 Citroen Xsara Picasso. The engine management light comes on and the car goes into limp home mode. I’ve had a diagnostics test carried out and was informed that the fault was an EGR malfunction.

I had the EGR valve replaced, along with the mass air flow meter, which cleared the engine management light, but I now have grey/black smoke coming from the exhaust and it is a bit sluggish when pulling away. Any idea what the problem could be?

Well from what you are describing it could be that the hoses from the turbo to the intercooler have become detached. This is a known problem on your model. They have replaced them with a modified type, but worth checking out in the first instance.
