Flooded BMW 1 Series

A friend of mine drove his leased BMW 1 Series 'at a reasonable speed' through a 'reasonable puddle' and has flooded the engine. He has been told it will cost £3000 – £6000 to fix. Is this a common problem with the 1 Series?
