Cambelt failure on Citroen C8 – should dealer pay for repairs?

I own a 2004 Citroen 2.2-litre C8 HDI, which I bought from my local franchised dealer in 2005. The car recently broke down on the motorway and the dealer told me it had suffered a cam belt failure, which resulted in catastrophic engine damage.

I have read the HJ forum about the issue of cam belts failing with C8s and it appears to be common knowledge. Is this something the garage should have checked and reasonably been able to spot as part of the car’s full service?

This is a well known fault on the C8, so yes, a Citroen francised garage would have checked. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/citroen/c8-2003/?sec...d

Your problem is that you have not had it serviced regularly enough, and you had it serviced by an independent garage that probably did not know about this problem area.
