Does my BMW 320D's sat nav require a software update?

I have just purchased a secondhand BMW 320D with a business satellite navigation system. The company kept the navigation disc. I have purchased a disc, but it keeps saying 'Media unable to be read'. I have been told that I need a software update to get the disc to work. Is this true?

You need to find a satnav specialist to sort this out, not DIY.
