Can you turn off Polo running lights?

Our new Volkswagen Polo has noticeably bright and distracting daytime running lights. Our Volkswagen dealer garage insists they cannot be turned off. Is this correct - I didn't think they were mandatory in this country? I find them a real nuisance on approaching vehicles.

There is a complicated means of switching them off, but you would need to disclose this to your insurer so my advice is to leave them on.
