What's the best way to use indicators when preparing to turn?

What is the perceived wisdom in respect of using one's direction indicators? On roundabouts, the left-hand signal is often given one exit too early and, and on straight roads, many drivers seem to consider it unnecessary to indicate a left-hand turn, or when they do, indicate perhaps just a few meters before the turn. I was taught to indicate my intentions "clearly and in good time". My practice is, where practicable, to indicate before applying the brakes, so that when the brake lights come on, following traffic knows why.

Tell other drivers what they need to know. So signal right as you are going round the roundabout and only signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you intend to take.
