Is it legal to wave at oncoming traffic to warn of a speed camera?

Do you remember the days when the AA patrolman with his motorbike and sidecar used to wave at motorists with an AA badge? If he did not wave it meant there was a speed trap ahead. No speed limit on the open road in those days either.

If the approaching car is speeding at the time you warn the driver and if the police can prove you warned a speeding driver, then it is illegal. You are aiding and abetting someone getting away with a crime and interfering with the police in the course of their duty. But if you merely warn non-speeding drivers of a hazard ahead, this is not illegal and this has been upheld in court.
