Wrongly issued with parking fine because of faulty machine - how can I respond to this?

On 19 March 2012 the ticket machine in our station car park was not accepting cards. I had no cash on me so advised the car park attendant who noted my registration and said that he was aware of this and that I could leave the car. Others were in the same situation. On 20 March the car park attendant said that the parking enforcement company had been around the previous day putting fines on cars when he was not around, but he had taken them off those that had advised him. Consequently I did not receive the initial fine to question at the time. I have now received a demand for £75. This seems unfair. Please could you give me some advice?

Yes. Send them the explanation you have sent me and point blank refuse to pay. Challenge them to take you to court and state that if they do you will countersue for what their negligence and subsequent attempt to defraud has cost you in time and money. Another parking enforcer was fined massively for this type of extortion.
