Should I replace my Ford Focus with something more economical?

I have only managed a maximum 35.5mpg from my Focus 1.6 at best, using BP Ultimate petrol. If I achieve 35mpg constantly, would you suggest just keeping the car? I can spend £3500 on a new car. I used the mpg calculator and, if I bought a car that did 50mpg instead of 32-33mpg, I would save roughly £900, which is quite a lot.

Yes, but if you bought a diesel on your budget you'd have to reckon on a new dual mass flywheel (£1200), new diesel particulate filter (£1200), new turbo (£1200) and new EGR (£600), all possibly within a year. Doesn't add up, does it?
