Is it legal to remove the DPF from my car?

Various companies are advertising diesel particulate filter removal services with associated re-programming of the ECU to stop the CEL lighting up. My understanding is it is only an EU requirement to have a DPF fitted at first registration and removing it will not affect subsequent MOT tests since it only affects cold start-up emissions. Is this right?

It is illegal under EC law to remove any emissions equipment from a car because that alters the car's certified emissions on its V5C. This is not checked for in the UK MOT because VOSA has not specified a check, but it does not alter the fact that removing a DPF is actually illegal. In France or Germany the car could be confiscated and impounded.
