The satnav in my BMW X3 doesn't accept seven digit postcodes - why?

I took delivery of a new BMW X3 in September 2011. I specified the wide screen satnav package at around £2500 and, as I had experience of using portable TomTom satnavs (with great satisfaction) for nearly eight years previously, I expected a lot from the BMW system which cost more than fifteen times as much. Unfortunately I have been very, very disappointed with the new BMW system, which I had been assured would accept full seven digit UK postcodes with no problem. It doesn’t. Lots are missing and many for places that have been in existence for donkey’s years.

This has come up before. The explanation is that the UK and Japan are the only countries in the world that have postcodes as precise as seven digits. The general world standard is a much less precise four digits. If a satnav is designed to work to seven digit codes, fine, it has no problem working to less precise four digit codes. But if a system is designed for four digit codes, while it can be reprogrammed to work to seven digit codes it won't always work properly to that degree of precision. I’m currently enjoying excellent service from the wide screen satnav in a BMW 320d, that even routes me round traffic jams.
