Do I need my water pump changing?

We are about to have the timing belt changed on our 2009 Scirocco TDi and have been advised by the dealer that as the engine needs to be removed to do this, it would be wise to change the water pump at the same time. They have quoted a cheaper price for this as the engine is already being removed.

My question is at what mileage would one expect a water pump to need changing? In 40 years of motoring I have never had one fail yet with mileages at over 100,000.

The car has covered about 30,000 miles.

The impellers on these pumps are know to fail and take out the timing belt, wrecking the engine. So I'd have it done.
