Volvo V70 diesel engine query

Having already had engine problems with a Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4D, purchased new in April 2007 (lower engine replaced at 2 years old due to high oil usage - replacement did not resolve problem - plus EGR valve replaced 6 months later) and reading around generally since, it appears there have been similar engine problems with many other diesel models.

We are considering purchasing a Volvo V70 2.0 SE D3 136PS to keep as a long term vehicle, but notice that the emissions rating for the newer 5 cylinder engine model has been reduced (119 CO2 g/km) compared to the previous 4 cylinder engine model (157 CO2 g/km).

Is it the case that, in general, the lower the emissions levels are from a diesel engine, the more chance there is of problems such as high oil usage, EGR valve problems?

Do you have any knowledge of problems with either of the two V70 engines please?

Many thanks

The 4 cylinder engine is PSA/Ford and though timing belt is generally quite reliable. Has a better record than the VAG 2.0 TDI. The 5 cylinder engine is Volvo, also timing belt, far fewer of them out there, but likely to suffer same problems as 2.4D5. See car by car.
