How safe do you need to be?

Have the Health and Safety anoraks at Audi gone too far? I start my new car in the garage, drive it outside, select 'Park' and apply the handbrake. Now, when I open the driver's door to close the garage, the engine stops.

Audi Customer Care told me that this should not happen and checked me into Norwich Audi for the fault to be investigated. They soon told me that it is a new safety feature and cannot be disabled.

When I learned to drive it was taught that the greatest engine wear took place during cold starts because of a rich fuel mixture diluting the cold oil on the cylinder bores. It was good practice to keep the engine running until the oil had reached working temperature.

Has this advice been overtaken by fuel injection and modern synthetic oils?

No, the advice has been taken over by VAG's nannying boffs. Same stupidity that stops you moving the lever from N to D without putting your foot on the brake.
