Timing belt changes

Three weeks ago, I took my car to a local garage to replace the timing belt. Today as I was driving, the engine stopped running - I called the AA, and when they turned up, they told me that the timing belt tensioner bolt had snapped in half. By looking at the bolt, it looked like it has never been replaced.

Can someone tell me if a lot of damage has been done to my engine, as I was driving when it happened. I took the car back to the garage, which replaced my cambelt, but he was trying to blame it on my engine...

The bolt will have been stresses by the change of the belt, but if you did not also ask for the tensioner to be changed, you cannot blame the garage.
