Which small premium hatchback?

We do about about 9000 miles annually, and have really enjoyed our 2008 Mini Cooper. But we now need a five-door for grandparent ferry services. The new Golf ACT is attractive but expensive, the 122bhp engine more sensibly priced but the has less standard equipment.

The new A3 Sportback isn't yet available with the 138bhp engine, but the 122bhp is current, as are some diesels, has better residuals and isn't much more expensive than the Golf but with poorer standard equipment.

It may come down to the greater convenience of the VW dealer. Please summarise the trade view for me.

Audi A3s have high residuals, but how much that means to you depends on what sort of discount you were able to get upfront. Avoid all the diesel versions of Golf and A3 unless you plan to dispose of the car within three years.
