Need a 4x4 - which SUV/Crossover would you recommend?

We currently have a Ford Galaxy for carrying three kids to school. It has been a very good car for clobber, although obviously uninspiring to drive, but what do you expect. We are changing school to a hilly country spot and want 4WD for bad weather and safety. Need room for kids and dogs to go to the coast on holiday too.

I like the look of the Volvo XC60, but not sure if a Subaru, Land Rover or another would be better. I think the XC90 is too big and Discovery too expensive to run. Comfort, safety and gadgets are probably more important than fuel, but I need an auto for my husband to drive it!

I have had a Honda CR-V before which I liked but husband not keen for another...

Currently a BMW X3 is the best. Cheaper, a Mazda CX-5 beats the new CR-V. New Kuga and RAV-4 on the way.
