Petrol or diesel executive car?

I do short journeys, mostly up to 4 miles, with occassional long journeys. I like BMW 5 Series or maybe C-Class estates and prefer 6 cylinder engines.

My dilemma is this: Will diesel engines inhibit and be problematic on such short journeys? I am not concerned about mpg. If you can recommend any other manufacturer/model by experience then I am willing to consider your respected advice.

You could have problems running a diesel with a DPF in this manner.
