Which pick up for the farm?

I require a replacement workhorse. While Land Rovers have served me well something a little more frugal on service and running costs is preferable.

You bang on about new diesel engines requiring a cycle on starting and suggest short avoiding short journeys. My use on the farm can be stop start, field gate to field gate, where full cycle will often not be complete. I am looking at either the Toyota Hilux range or the Ford Ranger. Which of these engines have the best track record and might suit my needs best?

Can't avoid DPFs but have heard of no trouble with them with most pick-ups. The best of the latest bunch are the Ford Ranger 2.2 diesel and the Isuzu D-Max 2.5 diesel.
