Engine Problems

I have a Fiesta Mk IV Zetec 1.25 Ghia 1999 (T Reg).

I seem to have two problems and I am not sure if they are related or not.

Problem 1 - The car has developed a fault where it 'judders' when under acceleration. This is worse if there is weight in the car (4 passengers etc). It is reminiscent of an older car which has an incorrect mixture setting.

Problem 2 - This is one of over-revving. When I have been driving the car say on the motorway and then come to rest at a junction, the engine continues at 2k plus rpm for about 30 seconds then it reduces to circa 850 rpm. Sometimes it just sits at 2k plus rpm for longer and if I freewheel (downhill with the car out of gear) the engine revs stay in the 2k area. There are sometimes different rpms that the car uses when it comes to rest but it makes me feel that its a suck throttle linkage.

I noted the excellent comments made on a similar problem by 'Screwloose' and others some years ago - I dont think I even understood the responses.

I am not sure if these two problems are related or are two separate issues.

Problem number 2 may be related to the poor electrical connection between the harness multi plug and throttle position sensor - a known fault on this model. If so then there is a known mod available to rectify - a new harness and sensor.

This may also be causing problem number 1 but if not then would suggest that you check the ECT (engine coolant temp sensor) and also the MAF (mass air flow sensor).

In addition also check for any air/ vacuum intake leaks etc.
