Comfortable mid-sized saloon?

I'm seeking a comfortable mid-sized car and am considering a used BMW 3 series. Many reports say they can cause/aggravate low back problems due to thier offset pedals. What are offset pedals and how do you go about identifying a car with offset pedals and to what degree they are offset?

No problem. I drive one 300 miles in one go without a twinge.
