Old banger or recent model?

I am looking at buying a used Volvo, but am undecided if I should buy a 1-2 year old V70/S60 for around £17k, or a 10 year+ old V70/850/S60 for £1K-2K

Most older cars advertised have very high milage, 100k+, is this bad?
My milage is around 12k a year, which is mainly to and from work.

I require an automatic, and my reason for changing is seat comfort.

If you are prepared for the inconvenience of breakdowns and the possible scrapping of the car because it is not worth repairing, then go for the banger.
