Need a new car for a new baby

I currently don't drive to work but a new job means that I will have a 15 mile commute. We also have a second child on the way. We currently have an 05 Focus 1.6 Zetec with approximately 90,000 miles.

Given our changing circumstances and an additional budget of up to £8000 would you recommend simply buying an estate car for the family and running the Focus as a commuter, or selling the Focus and getting an estate and small economical commuter (5 door ideally to accommodate occasional child seat)?

Our main priorities are safety and economy so suggestions for either solution would be greatly appreciated!

The Focus is worth buttons. Maybe £2,500. And that won't get you a good eco car. Better something more upright like an MPV than an estate, because that means less backbreaking bending to get the children in and out.
