Rulebook Britannia

Your readers might be interested in how VOSA checks up on the performance of MoT testers. They sit in a car nearby and log into the MoT testing station computer. A Vauxhall Vectra had been passed and was parked outside the test centre. The men from VOSA descended on the test centre and demanded to re-test the Vectra. After a full check on and off the ramp the tester was informed that the vehicle should have been failed. The reason was a small Christmas tree shaped air freshener was dangling from the mirror, and because it was flat side onto the screen at the time of the test it constituted a fail. Had it been sideways on it would have passed. The tester would not have been allowed to remove it before the test. He should fail the vehicle and the customer should remove the vehicle from the premises, unhook the offending air freshener and apply for a retest. While I agree completely with MOT stations being inspected, I thought that this was a little over the top.

Completely ludicrous. But because the VOSA decision cannot be challenged in a court of law these sticklers get away with it. That's what happens when draconian powers are given to the wrong people.
