Fooled consumption

I was very interested to read the email you published on Sat 3 September concerning the poor consumption being achieved by an Astra 1.7TDCI. Mine is the same but also EcoFlex and I only get 42mpg on average. The retailers insist that the car has to have run 5,000 miles to obtain optimum performance, which I am coming up to, but the consumption has remained consistent since I bought it in February this year. Could you also give me details of the Independent Analyst? I wonder about the legal position regarding this sale as, the sales rep told me, when I was enquiring about the car that it would achieve an average of 64mpg. This was one of the main reasons for buying it.

The specialist is peterdenayer@btinternet.com The legal position is that manufacturers are compelled by EC law to publish only the official EC figures for the car. So you would have to sue the EC. Go to: www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/ and use the box at the bottom of the relevant section to enter the real mpg of your car. So far we have a range of 46.5 to 51.2mpg for the 110PS and 41 to 48mpg for the 125PS.
