Why is my Mazda 6 returning just 40mpg when it is advertised as returning up to 52mpg?

I bought a Mazda 6 estate 'Takuya' edition in September 2010. It’s a 2.2TDi (163ps) with an advertised mpg of 40.9 urban and 52.3 combined. Given the rising price of fuel, the mpg performance was a key criterion for deciding upon this model. I have driven 4,000 miles now and have failed to average more than 40.5mpg for a tank driving in an even mixture of clear road and town. I have since noticed many reviews and forums online mention the same concern.

Mazda has suggested I should drive 10,000 miles before comparing. I accept that the advertised mpg is in ideal conditions. However my experience is more than 20 per cent below the advertised mpg.

Unfortunately, you (and many millions of others) have fallen victim to EC legislation. The relevant EC Directive compels manufacturers to use a prescribed test to assess the CO2 emissions and thus the fuel economy of their vehicles and compels manufacturers and dealers to quote only the figures thus achieved. Of course, manufacturers have optimised their car's performance for these tests whether or not the results bear any resemblance to what real motorists can expect in real life.

So you are a victim of EC Law, not of misrepresentation by the importer of your car or the dealer who sold it to you. To find out the true real life fuel economy of your car, go to The Real Life Fuel Economy Register at www.honestjohn.co.uk and use the opportunity to register your own fuel economy and adjust the overall average figure.
